Fallas and a giveaway!

Hi everyone!

I have been very busy this week. We are celebrating our Fallas week in Valencia.
If you don’t know about Fallas, it is a festivity here in Valencia. Falleros create beautiful sculptures that are burned at the end of the week. I suggest you to google about Fallas if you are interested, because my explanation was very poor. 🙂

What is my favorite thing to celebrate in the classroom? We create 3-D paper sculptures as little Fallas.
Kids got very creative adding little characters such as minions and little falleras.
Then we had our Fallas break and I have spent 5 days walking, seeing monuments, light music and parades. Just beautiful!

Now the giveaway!
Flapjack Educational Resources is having an enormous giveaway! There is only one day left! Good luck!

Carnival day!

Just a week after our 100th day we arrived to Carnival week.

We have a Circus theme in school this year.
This is my first year in this school, I heard that last year it was Fairy Tales… I wish I could have seen it.

Anyway, the whole school is decorated with a Circus Theme.
First Graders are Tamers. Isn’t that cool?  First we drew awesome lions to decorate the halls. I love using directed drawing with my kiddos.  These lions were a huge hit! We took the idea from this blog Spot of Color. It says that the idea is from a different source but I just can’t find it, sorry.
But you should definitely visit the blog if you need art ideas.
Then all the firstgraders drew tamers (directed drawing too) and they voted to pick one each class. We used this  www.blockposters.com to enlarge it so all the class could participate painting. I love how it looks.
Then we created the outfits for the Carnival Parade. They looked soooo cute I wish I could post the photos.
This Parade is a big tradition here in Valencia. The kids create the outfits in the school out of plastic bags. It is quite simple and I love that all the kids are able too wear the same costume.
This one was so easy that they even helped to create it.
And the parents bought the hats to complete them.
Did I tell you they looked great ? 🙂

100th day of school!

We did it!
Last week we finally reached our 100th day!
This is not a usual celebration in Spain so it was the first time that it was celebrated in my new school. The kids had lots of fun.
The three first grade classrooms celebrated it and I can tell you that the three first grade teachers had lots of fun preparing it. We are a great team.
We started the day with some counting and lots of excitement when handing out our 100 sparkling masks.
Then we played Celebrating 100 MOVE IT! from Primary Techie. It is FREE!
We also created long 1-100 ‘rulers’ to take home.
Snack time was a big hit. Each kid was allowed to eat 100 things.
We used mini cookies, peanuts, popcorn… Not all the kids finished it but they loved it. And it helped us counting by tens.

We also created a craftivity. This gumball machine is still hanging in our rooms. They were given 10 different colors to paint 10 gumballs with each color.
The kids brought their 100 collections in plastic bottles. We kept them in the classroom and we used them in our math center as we are currently studying weight.
They like finding out the heaviest collection and comparing them.

It was a little stressful as it was only a week before Carnival (a big celebration in Spain)
I’ll post some photos next week.
